Color Recipes for Chalk Paint®

Color Recipes for Painted Furniture by Annie Sloan

Just one of the wonderful attributes of Chalk Paint® is the ability to mix the palette
of 31 colors to create literally hundreds of additional colors. Lighten, darken, warm or cool the colors, it's up to you.

Although the colors are beautiful on their own, when you do sometimes want to tweak
for a custom color, how do you accomplish this?

Use Annie's Color Wheel (also in her book) to help you choose! Try lightening by mixing with Pure White or Old White, or try mixing with it's complimentary color to darken it beautifully. I am always amazed at the beautiful colors that can be created.

To create your own color, the best way is to start by mixing
different paints together with your fingers on paper or making small quantities in a paint tray. Annie's Sample Pots are perfect for this!

I like using Annie's Workbook (shown here) for mixing colors!

Once you have determined the colors to use, you can then mix in larger amounts.
I like to then mix in a glass measuring cup - easy clean up and amounts are nicely marked!

To help you on your journey, I am going to publish a Chalk Paint® Recipe
each week on my Facebook Page. These recipes come from my own testing as well as from other Chalk Paint® Stockists. It's fun to see what colors others have come up with too. So, if you have a great new color, please email me the formula.

My first recipe, one that I demonstrated at my recent Chalk Paint® Class, is for Coral. Here's the formula:

1part Emperor's Silk

 1 part Pure White

1/2 part Scandinavian Pink

1/2 part Barcelona Orange

(Remember, these are just parameters - try your own ratios.)

Here's the final result:

Custom Coral

P.S. - If you are creating a custom color, make sure you make enough to cover your entire piece.

Ode to Old Violet

Old Violet with Dark Soft Wax

Old Violet is just the prettiest muted violet with grey undertones
you'd ever want to see.

Like deep Parma violets or blue lavender it is a wonderful 18th century color
often used for painting the inside of furniture - like the lining of a jacket.

Old Violet
Add Old White
Add more Old White

Add Old White and you will get beautiful shades of violets / blues / greys.

Paris Grey

Paint as the base color with Paris Grey / Old White or Pure White on top and
distress for a wonderful aged affect.

It is of course wonderful on its own as I did here on this beautiful table -
love Old Violet in the garden!

Wouldn't it be beautiful with Emperor's Silk or Cream too?

Cream

Emperor's Silk

At my next Chalk Paint® Class in Richmond, we will learn more about
Old Violet and Annie's other fabulous colors.

Chalk Paint® Color Wheel

I love to discuss the versatility and ability to mix Annie Sloan's colors - all 31 of which can be lightened, darkened, mixed together, layered, the possibilities are endless!

Here, I mixed the newest Chalk Paint® color English Yellow with Old White for a soft creamier yellow for the base coat, then I layered with French Linen and waxed with a mix of Pure White and Clear Soft Wax.

I especially like to mix her colors with Old White or Pure White to lighten them or to layer as I have done below with English Yellow and French Linen (one of my all time favorites).

It's amazing how many variations you can create with just two colors (and Clear and Dark Soft Wax).

Mix two complimentary colors together, for example, English Yellow and Aubusson Blue to get a lovely green. English Yellow and French Linen together gives a beautiful grey/green.

Won't you join me at my next Chalk Paint® Class in Richmond on September 17th, to learn more about Annie's Colors?

The Class is complimentary, but please call 804-562-8326 to sign up.

P.S. - NEW RICHMOND STORE HOURS:

          Thu: 10 to 8
